Where Families Actually Live

Southwest Oklahoma towns have distinct personalities. While Lawton is the primary commercial center directly adjacent to the base, many families chose to live in the surrounding Comanche County school districts:

1. Elgin, OK (Northeast of Base)

Highly popular with families, Elgin has seen massive residential growth over the last 15 years. Located about 15 minutes east of Fort Sill, it is famous for having one of the highest-rated public school districts in Southwest Oklahoma. Housing is mostly modern subdivisions and suburban acreage.

2. Cache, OK (West of Base)

Located directly at the foot of the Wichita Mountains, Cache provides spacious properties, quiet acreage layouts, and mountain views. Favored by homeowners who want a slower country pace while maintaining a 10-minute highway commute to Lawton and the base gates.

3. Lawton, OK (Directly Adjacent)

Lawton is the largest city in the region, housing the main shopping districts, chain restaurants, and medical centers. It offers the closest commute to the main gates and a wide range of rental and buying budgets. School quality and home values vary significantly by neighborhood.

4. Medicine Park, OK (North of Base)

A historic cobblestone resort village surrounded by mountains. Popular for short-term cabin lodging, tourism, and weekend recreation, it maintains a unique resident community nestled around Bath Lake and Lake Lawtonka.

Southwest Oklahoma Homeowner Checklist

Southwest Oklahoma weather brings intense summer heat, high winds, winter freezes, and spring hail storms. Keep this home readiness checklist in mind:

  • AC Cooling Service: Summers regularly break 100°F. Have a trusted HVAC company inspect your compressor coils and coolant levels before June.
  • Hail Storm Damage: High winds and hail strike Comanche County annually. If a storm hits, get a free roof inspection from a Owens Corning-certified roofing company before filing insurance claims.
  • Freezing Pipes: Oklahoma winters feature sudden deep freezes. Insulate your outdoor spigots and locate your main water shut-off valve (usually near the road boundary) in case of line breaks.
  • Soil Clay Foundations: The dry, clay-rich soil can shift during drought periods. Keep foundation soils lightly watered or install localized landscaping drainage.
